The Bona Dea Fund

The Bona Dea Fund is a newly established health care initiative working to ensure uninsured artists and culture bearers are not turned away from medical treatment. In New Orleans, an uninsured individual can be denied medical treatment by a hospital or other medical institution based on lack of health insurance. Recently established as a Field Interest Fund that is managed by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, the Bona Dea Fund makes donations directly to hospitals on behalf of uninsured artists, particularly uninsured women artists seeking gynecological care.

A newly established health care initiative managed by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, the Bona Dea Fund is a Field Interest Fund. The Bona Dea Fund has a very specific focus, making donations directly to hospitals on behalf of uninsured artists and culture-bearers, particularly uninsured women artists seeking gynecological care.

The fund was established by a community-minded working artist from earnings made as an actor in the film industry. Working from the model that anyone can be a philanthropist, she will continue to make personal contributions from the income she earns in the film and television industry while seeking additional funding sources from foundations, as well as corporate and private sponsors. The Bona Dea Fund is working to develop the health and wellness of the New Orleans community by ensuring artists receive access to medical treatment.

Specific measurable goals the Bona Dea Fund hopes to achieve are:

  1. increased access to medical care for uninsured women artists and culture-bearers seeking gynecological care,
  2. increased access to medical care for uninsured artists and culture-bearers working in any artistic discipline
  3. improved avenues of medical assistance for artists and culture-bearers in the Greater New Orleans area.
